When Trout Get Selective
While many early-season trout eagerly take larger spring flies, some fish demand a more delicate approach.
Early season trout can be relatively easy to catch when they are carelessly feasting on the big flies synonymous with the springtime - large dark olives, March browns, olive uprights and the like.
But selective ‘sipping’ fish can be much more demanding - fish like this one hardly breaking the surface film as it carefully picked off midges in a sidestream off the main Cumbrian Eden.
A well presented small fly on as fine a tippet as you dare is the go-to approach and the combination of a Paraduster and Stroft ABR in 0.10mm worked perfectly.
